Why talking about SHINee in this new edition? There are way many reasons for doing so: because this year they celebrate their 3rd anniversary, because they are making a trend in kpop and the most importantly, because these five guys, have shown their love for Peruvian shawols, love shown by wearing the Peruvian football team jacket or even t-shirts with the name of our capital city, Lima, in their concerts.
Don’t you think so? In this article you will know everything about it as well as the history of this contemporary band
After their official debut in May 25th, 2008 in the Korean TV show called Inkigayo, the guys from SHINee gave their first concert (which was huge) in December 26th, 2010 in Japan, that means almost 3 years after debuting. Why did they take so long? And why did they do it in Japan and not in their country, Korea?
Let’s go step by step. It seems that for Korean bands to give a concert, they first have to release many albums as well as do lots of preparation. That’s the way to go for agencies like SM Entertainment, agency that manages SHINee. During that time of preparation, the band is gets ready to give a successful concert. In SHINee’s case, after their TV debut, they released mini albums, albums, repackage albums, etc (you will see the list in the next pages), in addition to this, they also had performances in TV music shows and broadcasting events. Everything but concerts.
Because of the great success they had from their productions and because their fandom grew in Asia and other places in the world (Peru for example, where they created a fanclub dedicated only to SHINee) many countries fought for the chance to host their first concert. Japan won this opportunity: they sold the tickets through internet, which were all sold out within 5 minutes. That is why they had to do a double concert the same day (December 26th, 2010, an historical date for all of their fans).
The popularity of the group is still growing nowadays, and their members are beginning to make it into other areas of their agency SM Entertainment. Onew has made it into theater. Minho in sports and rumor has it that he may be part of a new drama (the Korean version of the Japanese “Hana Kimi”).
SHINee WORLD
The name of the group means “the boys who receive light” but for their fans, they are the ones who light up the k-pop world. By the way, their fans are called “shawols”, a word that SHINee loves to use, especially Onew.
Many of their fans are teenagers, that is why the fans always address them as “oppas” (older brother). The reason for them to have many teenage fans is because they began their career at a very young age.
LOVE FOR PERU
Internationally, Peruvian shawols are very well known because of their continuous activities (fan actions, fan meetings, slide shows, celebrations, etc) which they always record and upload to internet. People say that the members of SHINee might have watched some of these videos, and that’s why in their concerts they have worn t-shirts with names such as Lima and Peru.
But the most significantly was when Minho wore the Peruvian football team jacket. The same image was added into a booklet inside of one of their albums. That is why Peruvian shawols love them even more and dream about the day they come to our country.

Thanks to Rosa Guerrero, Elizabeth Pariona and Nataly Sanchez (staff members of SHINee Peru) we could have a look of their original albums and confirm that in each album they reinvent themselves completely. Replay: First mini album, released in their country, Korea, with a colorful concept
SHINee World A: First album and where they maximized the concept shown in Replay
SHINee World B: It’s the same first album but with other images and other concept. It’s common for them to release two versions of the same album
A.MI.Go: It’s the repackage of the first album. They changed their look and concept, they keep the songs of the first album, but has remixes and extras.
Romeo: Second Mini Album, the one they released in even 5 versions. Here is the song called “Señorita” where the introduction is spoken in perfect Spanish.

LIVING IN JAPAN
Currently, the band is living in Japan y they will be there for a long period of time, learning the language and releasing songs in Japanese. Is a natural step in Asian industry, which means that SHINee’s career is now rising, heading them to an established point, as well as other Korean bands such as TVXQ and SS501.
Year.Of.Us (YOU): Third mini album, they walked away from the colorful image to take a “dark” concept, not only in their clothes but also in their hairstyles
Lucifer A: It’s their very much awaited second album. It has nothing to do with evil connotations, because “Lucifer” is just a very beautiful girl which is nothing more than an angel
Lucifer B: This version has another cover and other images. Here, all the pictures were chosen by the members and in one of the pictures you can see Minho wearing the Peruvian football team jacket.
Hello: With a totally different look, SHINee gave us their repackage album of their Lucifer production. It has remixes and extras.
Replay: This is their first Japanese album, the beginning of their career in Japan. This “Replay” is the Japanese version of their first Korean mini album.

[magazine] SHINee Interview on Anan July 13
SHINee, a group who made a debut recently with “Replay-you are my everything” and whose popularity is soaring up with their refined sound and captivating dance technique. They are the most competent and anticipated among groups of the same generation, but their unity and good teamwork is another reason they attract people. On the photoshoot, they showed their teamwork.
On the photoshoot for shots with all of the five, Jonghyun led the other four saying “Let’s try a smiling version at first,” “Jump at one, two, three.” During the shooting with two or three of them, Key made an oyaji gag(?): on the camera man’s request, “All with the same [*onaji in Japanese] pose,” Key said “Oyaji pose?”, and it froze everyone still. Taemin was excited like a kid when he floated in the air held up by Onew and Minho. During solo shots, Minho got funny to make Key laugh, and Onew made funny faces, so everyone burst into laughter. Everyone was in a happy mood throughout the photoshoot thanks to the members. When it was finished, they bowed 90 degrees, shouting “Thanks for your hard work!” I think I’ll fall more in love with the five members whose teamwork and manners are perfect!
-Thank you! How was today’s photoshoot?
Onew: (In Japanese) it was great~!
Key: (In Japanese) as for the suits, I thought, “This is Japanese style!” I enjoyed it
Taemin: Me too! Wearing clothes we are not likely to wear usually, I feel I saw a new side of us.
Minho: Eh~ and it’s a style we don’t try often…
Taemin: Don’t copy me (laugh).
Minho: I’m not copying you~
Jonghyun: OK, OK. Why don’t we sum it up like, “The photoshoot was fun, and the suits matched us well, so we had a good photo time”?
-I heard you passed auditions to enter into the entertainment world. What song did you sing in your audition?
Onew: I don’t remember…
Key: Me neither~
Jonghyun: I sang “I believe I can fly”. I thought I should choose a song familiar to everyone. But I haven’t sung it recently, so now I couldn’t sing it well.
Minho: I sang the national anthem. I had to take the audition without preparation. The judges told me, “Then, sing the national anthem.”
Taemin: I sang DBSK sunbae-nim’s “I believe.”
Onew: Ah, vague memories are coming back.
Taemin: I only prepared dance. I didn’t know the audition included a singing part. I was nervous as I had to sing without preparation.
Key: Now I remeber! I also sang a DBSK song! I sang several songs. A Trax sunbaenim song too. “It is raining~♪” Right, right, I recalled it.
Onew: Oh, no. I can’t recall mine. Sorry.
-It’s OK (laugh). Then, what song are you into these days?
Onew: I’m listening to Kelly Clarkson’s often recently. I like quiet songs.
Minho: I also listen to pops. Like Justin Bieber.
Key: Justin Bieber! Oh, you’re cool. I’m listening to Korean girl group f(x)’s Pinocchio. It’s very popular. I also bought a CD.
Taemin: When they are from the same company?
Key: Yes (laugh), I did.
Jonghyun: As for me, Irish music. It’s like English traditional music…don’t you know?
Onew: That’s not a song, but a genre.
Jonghyun: I listen to this or that, so I can’t pick one song. Irish is… I don’t know how to explain the melody.
Key: Irish is like this or that mixed, hard to explain. It’s not new age, nor classical. But it has a distinct color.
Jonghyun: It is often used in a Japanese animation or documentary program… It’s also in the OST for Korean movie Don’t Step Out of the House. Experiencing different kinds of music or performance is nourishing to me. So I try not to have only what I like, but to experience diverse fields.
-I heard you are studying Japanese hard. What Japanese words do you like?
Onew: “mayuge [eyebrow]”. I thought I should memorize it since eyebrow is my charming point.
Jonghyun: “shouganaina [it can't be helped]~” Doesn’t it sound funny?
Minho: “Tensai [genius]”. Sakuragi Hanamichi of Slam Dunk says it several times. (Imitating Sakuragi) “Tensai desukara!”
Key: Minho-goon, sasuga [as expected]~. Ah, “sasuga~” is a Japanese word I like.
Taemin: “sobaniiruyo [I’ll be by your side]”. I listen to J-pop these days, and it was in the lyrics. In addition, what I recently say a lot is “Kore wa nan desuka [What is this in Japanese]?”
Minho: Taemin says it very often really~
Key: In a very slow tempo, “Ko~re~wa na~n de~su~ka [Wha~t i~s thi~s]?”
Taemin: Because I want to know the words from a TV program or (pointing at the table) this or that in Japanese. I want to know everything!
-You are really studying hard! Since you mentioned Taemin’s verbal habit, how about yours?
Key: As for me, I start talking with “ani [nay]~” in Korean. “Ani, it is~” “Ani, I~” It doesn’t mean anything particular… Umm, it’s hard to translate into Japanese~ “Nandaro~” or “Jyanakute~”?
Onew: “ano~”?
Minho: “nanka~”
Key: Yes, it might be close to “nanka”
Onew: I use adverbs like “Neomu [so much]” or “Goengjanghi [greatly]~”
Key: And Onew hyung claps before talking.
Onew: Do I?
Jonghyun: I add, “how to say it,” before a sentence. To explain it easily, I think.
Onew: Suddenly, I am struck by Taemin’s verbal habit. The word he uses often during an interview.
Key: I know what it is. “Now”?
All: Ah~ right.
Key: He repeats “now” several times.
Taemin: “We will now release an album, now as SHINee, now will be back to you, so now support us much!”
Minho: He adds it at every phrase, so it appears more than 4 times (laugh).
Taemin: Ahaha, how about Key hyung? Is there anything else?
Key: Raising the end of sentence and speaking fast, maybe?
Onew: No one here speaks slow. “~kka”, is that your habit?
Minho: How about me? Anything?
Jonghyun: Minho only talks at minimum~ (laugh)
Key: Ah, how about this? “I di~d XX” “It i~s XX”
All: That’s right! He drags the end of sentence!
Taemin: (in a small voice) he can’t pronounce “s” well.
Minho: That’s… not a habit~! (laugh)

Onew: Finally we debut in Japan! I want to show our cool performances to all.
Taemin: We should be well-prepared to do so! I hope you look forward to it as we try to show perfect performances.
Key: Our debut song “Replay – you are my everything” is a Japanese version of our Korean debut song. I’m nervous how Japanese fans will think of it.
Jonghyun: There is this part, “She doesn’t know my true feelings~,” in the lyrics. It is my favorite part. It expresses the song’ s theme fully.
Key: I like that part too. It’s a totally “moving (in Japanese)” point (laugh). The M/V shows a story of five of us in love with the same girl…What if that really happens!?
Onew: Eh!? But our favorite types are different, so it won’t happen (laugh)!!
Jonghyun: If so, how would you appeal your charm? As for me, maybe frankness? But I’m not good at appealing to a girl I like. If I’d try to, I’d probably say, “I’ll sing a song for you”…
Key: Me too. Maybe frankness. I want to show the way I am to a girl I like as I do to my friends.
Minho: “Being sincere and sometimes playful” is maybe my charm (shy). And…being competitive? To a girl I like, I want to be by her side when she has some trouble.
Onew: I think my appeal point is “being friendly.” To a girl I like, I think I’ll try to strike up a conversation.
Taemin: Hmm, my strong point is maybe “working hard for whatever”? So to a girl I like, I will work hard to make her happy!
Key: Oh My God (laugh)!
Jonghyun: If I have to compete with Taemin, I’ll just give up (laugh).
Onew: (laugh) We are debuting in Japan. Do you have any memories of your birthday related to our debut?
Jonghyun: I remember everything about my birthday parties I celebrated with fans. Especially this year’s birthday party was an opportunity I was able to talk with fans after a 3~4 month term because of my leg injury.
Minho: When I turned 20, I got on a plane the day before my birthday. But when I arrived in Korea, it was the day after my birthday because of time difference. I realized how precious a birthday is! I’ll try to remember all your birthdays!!
